What is Laser Dentistry?

Lasers have been used for decades in dentistry, and allow our Ramsey, NJ, dentist to treat patients in a manner that maximizes their comfort. The diode laser instruments in our office operate using super-concentrated light, and can be held much the same way as a traditional dental instrument.

Due to the extremely precise nature of a laser, Dr. Randolph is able to provide treatment that is minimally invasive to neighboring parts of the mouth, and aids the healing process by actively cauterizing the treatment area.

Here are some of the other benefits associated with laser dentistry:

  • Faster healing and tissue regeneration.
  • Preservation of more of the natural tooth.
  • Reduced bleeding during and after treatment.
  • Reduced need for anesthesia.
  • Reduced need for stitches and sutures.
  • Reduced risk of bacterial infections after procedures.

How can laser dentistry help me?

Laser dentistry is incredibly versatile and plays an important role in a growing number of common dental procedures.  Though laser dentistry is most notably associated with cosmetic treatments, it is equally effective for preventative purposes.

Here are some of the ways that dental lasers can be used:

  • Tooth preparation – Prior to laser dentistry, a drill would be required to prepare the tooth for a filling.  Lasers can now completely eliminate the need for drilling and anesthesia. Lasers also successfully kill oral bacteria around the surgical site.
  • Reshaping soft tissue – Dental lasers can dissolve soft tissue to expose more of the natural tooth (crown lengthening), reshape soft tissue to make “gummy smiles” more attractive, and remove uncomfortable soft tissue folds caused by denture wear.
  • Frenectomy – Lasers can improve speech and the feeding habits of babies, children and adults by untying the tongue.
  • Tumor removal – When benign tumors have formed in the soft tissue areas of the mouth, a dental laser can completely remove them without causing pain.
  • Whitening – Lasers can greatly expedite the tooth whitening process by increasing the activity of the particles in the peroxide bleaching solution.
  • Biopsy – Lasers are sometimes used to perform a biopsy on suspicious areas of soft tissue.  This biopsy procedure can be performed instantly and with great precision.

Laser Operculectomy

For younger patients whose adult molars are erupting, or whose wisdom teeth are beginning to emerge, they may experience soreness or tenderness from the portion of the gum that covers the top of the molar. This portion of gingival tissue, referred to as the operculum, sometimes remains over a fully erupted molar, causing discomfort from everyday activities like chewing and speech.

At the Ramsey practice of Dr. Laura Randolph, we alleviate this soreness through a process known as laser operculectomy. With this treatment, Dr. Randolph removes the operculum, allowing patients to return to regular functionality without the risk of aggravating soft tissue.

Gum Removal and Contouring

Ideally, a smile should have uniform amounts of visible gum tissue and dental enamel. If you feel that your smile appears unbalanced or has reduced aesthetic appeal due to uneven or overly visible gums, our team is able to help. Laser gum contouring makes it possible to remove excess gum tissue from the front of your smile, and to shape the gums for optimal symmetry.

Laser gum treatment facilitates recovery, and increases patient comfort during treatment, providing you with more time to enjoy your newly uniform smile.
